At 9:31 a.m. Monday, April 2, University of Washington Police received a call about gunshots being fired in Gould Hall, which is the headquarters for the College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Police arrived at the scene within a few minutes and proceeded to the scene on the southeast corner of the fourth floor, where two people, a man and a woman, were down. The Seattle Fire Department arrived on the scene at roughly the same time and was able to determine that both people were deceased.
At the current time, the UW cannot release information about the identity of either individual, but police are calling the incident a murder-suicide. One of the deceased, the female, was a UW staff member, about 26 years old, and the male, 41, does not appear to have any affiliation with the UW. Gould Hall is closed for the day but the rest of the UW is open.
Police officials said the weapon was recovered and "we have every reason to believe one of the deceased is the suspect."
The UW Office of the Registrar and Classroom Support Services are working together to relocate some classes and seminars scheduled for Gould Hall this afternooon and evening. Most of the non-College of Architecture and Urban Planning classes have been relocated to alternate locations for today and this evening. Most other courses have been cancelled.
Students are encouraged to contact the Office of Registrar at (206) 543-5378 for more information on whether or not their class has been relocated today. In addition, students are also requested to regularly check their emails for notifications from their professors and instructors on updates regarding class cancellations or temporary relocations.
Members of the UW community impacted by the double-shooting this morning in Gould Hall may avail themselves of a number of free services for crisis and grief counseling. Students may drop by the Student Counseling Center, located in Schmitz Hall, Room 401 to talk to trained counselors. In addition, both students and faculty/staff may go to the UW's Mental Health Clinic, located at Hall Health, 3rd Floor. Students also can call U-CALL, the University Community After-hours Listening Line at (206) 543-CALL to talk anonymously to a peer volunteer about their emotions. U-CALL is operated through Hall Health.
